Lefkara, Cyprus - The Agora Hotel has reached an important new stage in The Heritage Sustainability Project, an EU-funded initiative supported through the fuTOURiSME programme, aimed at helping tourism businesses across Europe to strengthen their environmental and digital practices.

Since joining the programme earlier this year, the boutique hotel has been focused on turning long-term sustainability goals into practical systems and day-to-day actions that support both its operations and the wider community of Lefkara.

One of the project’s latest milestones was the completion of a staff training programme centred around sustainable hospitality management. Through a series of workshops and collaborative sessions, team members were introduced to internationally recognised sustainability principles based on ISO 26000 standards, with discussions covering environmental responsibility, workplace wellbeing, governance, and the role of technology in monitoring and improving performance.

The training also explored how digital tools can support more informed decision-making within hospitality businesses. By involving staff across different departments, the programme aimed to ensure sustainability becomes part of everyday operations rather than a separate initiative.

Alongside the training, The Agora Hotel has been developing a digital sustainability management platform tailored specifically to the needs of a boutique hotel. The platform will allow the team to monitor key sustainability indicators, track greenhouse gas emissions, manage reporting processes, and better understand the hotel’s environmental and social impact.

The system is being developed in collaboration with sustainability consultants and software specialists and is expected to play a central role in the hotel’s long-term sustainability strategy.

At the same time, work has continued shaping a broader Sustainability Strategy for the property. Through internal assessments and stakeholder consultations, the hotel has identified priority areas including energy consumption, waste management, employee wellbeing, and the preservation of local culture and community identity.

For The Agora Hotel, the project is as much about preserving the character of Lefkara as it is about improving operational practices. “This project has allowed us to take a more honest and structured look at how we operate,” said Nicodemos, Director of Business Intelligence at The Agora Hotel. “It’s helping us understand where we can improve, how we can make better decisions, and how we can grow responsibly while remaining connected to the community and environment around us.”

As the next phase of the project begins, the hotel will focus on implementing additional sustainability measures, finalising its long-term strategy, and working toward third-party verification aligned with ISO 26000 principles.

The Agora Hotel will also continue sharing the project’s progress and insights with the wider tourism sector, contributing to ongoing conversations around more responsible and resilient hospitality practices in Cyprus and across Europe.
